Keep your registry records accurate so that networks can route traffic, troubleshoot problems and contact the correct people.

IP addresses and AS numbers are finite public resources delegated on demonstrated need and subject to IRINN policy. Once you have received internet resources from IRINN, it is your organisation's responsibility to ensure they are managed according to IRINN address space management policies — including registration, usage responsibilities and best practices.

Update your registration

The IRINN Whois Database is an official record containing information about the organisations that hold IP addresses and AS numbers in India.

Each organisation holding internet resources is responsible for updating its own information in the database. Because the database is used to assist with network troubleshooting and to help track network abuse, it is extremely important that contact details are accurate and current.

Public or private assignments

An affiliate can choose whether its assignment or sub-allocation registration is public or private:

Register a route object

IRINN provides Routing Registration Services for all account holders. To use this service, register a route object: a compact record that links an IP address range to the Autonomous System (AS) authorised to announce it.

IRINN policy does not make route-object registration mandatory. However, your upstream provider or network policy may require it. Network operators use route-object information in the Internet Routing Registry to:

  • Debug routing problems
  • Automatically configure backbone routers
  • Perform network planning

We suggest you discuss the requirement of registering route objects with your ISP.

Forward translation

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a globally distributed internet service. It is a hierarchical naming system in which easy-to-remember names are translated into the numbers required for devices to network across the internet.

Reverse translation

If you have a domain name and want to find out the IP address it belongs to, you can query the numerical hierarchy that co-exists with the name hierarchy: the reverse DNS.

Reverse DNS delegations allow requesters to map to a domain name from an IP address. Reverse delegation is achieved by the use of pseudo-domain names in in-addr.arpa for IPv4 and ip6.arpa for IPv6.
